Brief Introduction of Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), a realism and modern painters, is one of the most influential artists in the history of Western art. Born in the southern Netherlands, he mainly learned painting by himself. In around 10 years, he created about 2,100 arts, 860 oil paintings and 150 watercolor paintings included. The subjects of paintings include landscape, still life, portrait etc. Van Gogh was not successful during his lifetime. What’s worse, he was considered as a madman and a failure. He became famous after his death. Famous oil paintings of his now are priceless.
Painting Style
In the early years (around 1882-1885), Van Gogh painted in a very somber way with dark colors, mainly figure and still life paintings, such as The Potato Eaters. During two years in Nuenen, he finished nearly 200 oil paintings. Van Gogh moved to Paris and shared apartment with his brother in 1886. His paintings turned to be brighter and bolder. And, during the time in Arles, he completed more arts, about 200 oil paintings, more than 100 drawings and watercolors. Deeply impressed by the local landscape and light, he applied yellow, ultramarine and mauve a lot in his artworks. Most of his great oil paintings were completed in France during 1888-1890, such as Sunflowers series, Irises series, The Starry Night etc.
