Renoir (1841-1919) was a French artist who was a leading oil painter in the development of the Impressionist style. In 1844, His family moved to Paris for better financial situation. When young, he studied at a Catholic school, and he had his first exposure to art as a teenager. In 1862, he began studying art under Charles Gleyre in Paris. Afterwards, he displayed his oil paintings but most of them were not so welcome. Till the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, his oil paintings were well-received besides critical response.
In his early career, Renoir spent lot of time in sketching. Renoir’s early works captured true life scenery and themes were joyful and relaxed. While in middle years, Its believed that Renoir might just use five colors in his palette. Porcelain made him learning a lot of color combination. After 1890, his oil paintings changed and became more linear. He began adapting bold lines to paint and black to make contrast. Renoir focused more on form and contours for his oil paintings.
During Impressionism movement period, Renoir accepted commissions for his work, and one of his most famous oil paintings is the piece Madame Charpentier and Her Children. After exhibiting several times at the Salon, he toured Italy and other areas of Europe in search of inspiration. While traveling around Europe, Renoir completed several oil painting pieces, including Dance in the City.
